This paper proposes a step-by-step procedure for calibrating signalized intersections in VISSIM based on a measurable variable, which is the degree of saturation.
However, validating VISSIM based on a non-inbuilt attribute is yet to be explored. VISSIM attributes such as the volume-to-capacity ratios, vehicle delay, and queue lengths, are normally used during the validation process of signalized intersections. Most of the existing calibration and validation efforts are normally based on the comparative analysis between the built-in attributes of VISSIM and the real-world scenarios using measures of effectiveness (MOEs).

Rational solutions from such simulations are contingent upon how well the simulation software is calibrated and validated to replicate real-world road network scenarios. Microscopic traffic simulation is considered as a reliable tool in transportation planning and management. Through the validation, it is proved that the estimation error of SFR and SLT can be significantly reduced by the proposed adjustment factors. Sensitivity analyses proved that approaches with high volumes, short segment lengths, large green ratios, positive offset, or large cycle lengths are more easily affected by downstream conditions. Proposed adjustment factors are governed by common traffic indicators. By the experimental data, Adj models are derived through heuristic optimisation based regression analyses. An improved cell transmission model is created to build a simulation platform that can well reproduce the downstream influence. This research aims to propose adjustment factor models (Adj models) for both saturation flow rate (SFR) and start-up lost time (SLT) in through lane groups considering downstream conditions. However, there is no methodology reasonably accounting for this effect. The results show that autonomous vehicles may significantly decrease intersection capacity. In the last section of the study, the effect of autonomous vehicles on signalized intersection performance in an unconnected environment is discussed.

In this study, changes in traffic flow characteristics were examined in a mixed system consisting of human drivers and autonomous vehicles.
